Course description

The Autism Awareness for Educators programme has been designed to provide students with a greater knowledge and understanding of Autism. Over one in one hundred children now are diagnosed with autism. This figure is increasing all of the time and many children remain undiagnosed. Autism is found in most school environment. Many schools will have large numbers of children with autism at any given time. As awareness increases and diagnostics change, all classes will have at least one child with autism.

Children with autism think, xperience and see the world differently to others, resulting in misinterpreting and misunderstanding. Educators need to be aware of how they can best support children on the autistic spectrum to allow them to receive an appropriate education, interact with others and function effectively. Classrooms must be inclusive, balancing the needs of autistic children with the needs of others, creating an appropriate learning environment for all. Some children with autism may need to be educated in independent, residential schools, special needs or schools for gifted children.
