Course description

In 2013, there were 44 million people living with dementia worldwide and this number is expected to more than triple in the next 35 years.

Course content

This course is split into manageable sections. These are:

Section 1: Understanding what dementia is

In this section, learners will what dementia is, the key functions of the brain that are affected by dementia and other conditions that may be mistaken for dementia.

Section 2: Understanding key features of theoretical models of Dementia

Learners will be able to identify models of dementia within health and social care and understand dementia as a disability.

Section 3: Know the most common types of dementia and their causes

This section will teach the learner the most common causes of dementia, the risk factors and the prevalence rates for dementia.

Section 4: Understanding factors relating to an individuals experience of dementia

In this section, learners will be introduced to individual experiences of dementia and the attitudes and behaviours of others.

Support

You will receive an online password for the course and unlimited tutor support via email and telephone whilst you study this course.

Start times

Allow an average of 2-3 hours to complete the course however you can spread your study over 3 months. Work at your pace to suit your own circumstances. You can stop your course at any time and continue your studies when best for you.

Awarding organisation

At the end of this course successful learners are awarded a Certificate of Achievement by Durham Open Learning College confirming that they have met the assessment requirements of this course. The Certificate of Achievement can be used as a valuable record of Continual Professional Development (CPD).
