Course description

This Diabetes in Children and Young People course has been written for those who are involved in the care sector and aims to give all staff, supervisors and managers the essential knowledge and skills needed to offer the very best diabetes management, care and advice.

Diabetes is a serious health condition where the amount of blood glucose in the body is much higher than its requirements. As a result the body cannot use it as efficiently as it should do. This is due to the pancreas (a small organ that is situated behind the stomach) either not producing any or enough insulin. In basic terms there are two types of diabetes i.e. type 1 and type 2. It is a common health problem for both males and females around the world.

Whilst diabetic symptoms and the conditions that are associated with diabetes can be treated to some degree, sadly there is no known cure. It is important to spot the symptoms of diabetes ASAP so as to prevent many of the serious complications associated with the condition developing or progressing further.
