Course description
This Forensic Science Diploma Level 4 course examines the fascinating subject area of Forensic Science. Forensic Science is often defined as the application of science to the law. In criminal cases forensic scientists are often involved in the search for, and examination of, physical traces which might be useful for establishing or excluding an association between someone suspected of committing a crime and the scene of the crime or victim.
These traces in many cases include blood and other body fluids, hair, textile fibres from clothing for example. I addition, materials used in buildings such as paint and glass, footwear, tool and tyre marks, flammable substances used to start fires etc. Sometimes scientists visit the crime scene to advice about possible sequences of events, indicators of who the perpetrator might of been and join the initial evidence searching process. Also forensic scientists analyse suspected drugs or abuse, specimens from people thought to have taken drugs or for example been driving after drinking too much alcohol, or have been poisoned. Others could specialise in firearms, explosives, or the cause of a fire or a road accident for which damages are being claimed.
Forensic scientists can represent a range of parties or either side. For example, prosecution or defence in criminal matters, and plaintiffs or defendants in civil ones. They present their findings and or opinions in written form either as formal statements of evidence or reports. They are often required to attend court to give their evidence. Evidence collected and presented by forensic scientists is subject to the rules of evidence and the provisions of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. For this reason the importance of the continuity of the chain of evidence is reinforced throughout the course.
