Course description

This Level 4 Forensic Science Diploma course comprises of twenty subject modules covering key aspect of crime scene investigation.

The initiaModule 1 covers crime scene investigation known as field forensics and focuses on the importance of time, care and detail when evaluating a crime scene.

The next modules focus on crime scene evidence, the legal categories of evidence in criminal investigation and visits the classification of evidence. Types of evidence i.e. Biological, Non- Biological, Fingerprint, Ballistics and Arson evidence are covered in detail.

The course also covers evidence at Explosive Scenes and identifies the for example a difference between an accidental explosion and the triggering of a bomb. In this module learners will explore how explosives differ and how this is important in helping the Investigator to decide on what evidence to look for.

Forensic Pathology is then covered in the next modules and students look at the key area of forensic pathology of a crime scene and at the mortuary. It covers the Coroner and Pathologist role and how evidence is collected and estimation of time of death can be established. The autopsy process is investigated along with the many ways that death can occur along with how a forensic pathologist can determine same.

The remaining modules focus on different roles within Forensic Science i.e the Forensic Anthropologist, Odontologist and Entomologist.

For example: in Forensic Anthropology you cover the anthropological determination of gender, age, height, weight and individual differences.

In Forensic Odontology you will cover how the characteristics of human dentition helps to identify human remains, how human dentition can be used to help establish the age of human remains and explore how bite marks can establish connections between a suspects and the victims.

Whilst in Forensic Entomology you will investigate arthropods, insects and their role in determining PMI. You will also examine the actions of the forensic entomologist i.e. crime scene investigator at the scene, investigate the life cycle of the blowfly, factors in its development and its importance in determining PMI.

The course then covers the role of Forensic Botany by investigating the sub discipline of palynology, anatomy and dendrochronology, plant ecology and limnology.

Forensic Serology is then reviewed and the student examines the role of the forensic serologist, blood typing, the analysis of blood, semen, saliva other bodily fluids in the laboratory.

The next modules detail DNA Typing, Forensic Toxicology and Firearms Investigation.

For example, DNA Typing covers DNA and its structure, DNA coding, DNA testing and profiling, the National DNA database and the legislation that supports it.

Then you investigate toxicology and the role of the forensic toxicologist, you examine presumptive and confirmatory testing for drugs and poisons and chains of evidence maintenance reference toxicological samples.

Firearms Investigation then looks into the role of the firearms examiner, firearms identification, ammunition comparison, distance and angle of trajectory, identification of trace evidence, analysis of gunshot residue and serial number restoration.

Finally you will examine the role of the questioned document examiner, key documentation, examine handwriting analysis, investigate the examination of typewriters and typewritten documents, word processors and printed documents and investigate the examination of forged documents, the examination of inks, papers and document verification.

Each module throughout the Forensic Science Diploma oiutlines the importance of preserving the chain of custody or the chain of evidence at a crime scene.

This course has been developed as a progression course from our Level 3 Forensic Science Diploma.
