Course description

The modules of this Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma (HLTA) Level 4 course have been based around the professional standards for HLTA status. This sets out to teachers, employers and pupils the contribution a teaching assistant can be expected to make to a pupil’s learning. This course does not supply you with a HLTA status. It has however, been written in conjunction with the 33 TDA standards and will give you all the knowledge needed to successfully progress in this field. These standards cover three areas:

Professional attributes (standards 1-7)

Such skills set out the attitudes, values and also the commitment expected of a Higher Level Teaching Assistant.

Professional knowledge and understanding (standards 8-16)

These attributes set out the information, knowledge and skills needed by HLTAs to be able to work effectively with teachers who play a vital role as part of the professional team supporting learning.

Professional skills (standards 17-33)

These skills set out the expectations for monitoring, planning, managing and also evaluating learning within the framework of supervision which will be agreed with the teacher, and also arrangements made by the head teacher of the selected school.

Students will be required to complete a range of questions all of which are in place to encourage a variety of responses. These answers will include descriptive responses or the completion of more hands on practical activities. If you work with children at the moment you can use the activities completed to support your role. However if you do not currently work with children, you will find that the questions have been structured in a particular way so that you will have an alternative method of answering them.
