Course description
In 2013, around 1 in 12 adults had taken and illicit drug, which equates to around 2.7 million people.
Make sure you know everything about the causes and effects of substance misuse, as good knowledge and awareness will help reduce this statistic.
A great addition to your CV to show your commitment to health and fitness, this is also beneficial for general knowledge.
Course content
This course is split into manageable sections. These are:
Section 1: Different substances and drugs
This section defines the terms substance and drugs, explores different types of drugs and looks at how different drugs and substances can be categorised. Learners will look at the common names used for each drug as well as the methods people use to take them and the effects they experience as a result. The reliability of drugs is also covered in this section and learners will look at useful sources which provide help and advice around drugs and substances.
Section 2: Why people take drugs and the laws surrounding drugs
Learners will gain knowledge about the reasons why people choose to take drugs, including factors from their background and lifestyle which may affect their decisions. This section also looks as the classification of drugs and the laws surrounding drugs, including the penalty and punishment people will face if they choose to get involved with drugs.
Section 3: The effects of substance misuse
This section explores the effects that drugs can have on various parts of a persons life, including their health, finances, personal safety and social life. Other topics that are covered include the dangers of using substances as well as the risks and desired effects that are associated with each one. The learner will also look at the effect substance misuse has on society as a whole.
Section 4: Perceptions of substance misuse
In this final section, learners will look at the different stereotypes that are linked with drugs and substances and how the perceptions of drugs can be influenced by media reports. Useful sources that can be used to find the extent of substance misuse are explored in this unit as well as the different ways that substance misuse can be responded to.
Previous knowledge
No prior learning knowledge or experience is essential to take this course.
Assessment
You can complete this course on our interactive online learning platform, EQUAL, where your knowledge will be assessed through a series of short answer questions with no examinations.
Support
You will receive an online password for the course and unlimited tutor support via email and telephone whilst you study this course.
Start times
Allow an average of 2-3 hours to complete the course however you can spread your study over 3 months. Work at your pace to suit your own circumstances. You can stop your course at any time and continue your studies when best for you.
Awarding organisation
At the end of this course successful learners are awarded a Certificate of Achievement by Durham Open Learning College confirming that they have met the assessment requirements of this course.
